TV Tie-Ins

tvtieinsbannerThe history of the TV Tie-In novel is long and illustrious. From the earliest days of televised dramas and situation comedies, publishers have realized that they had a built in audience for original novels based on popular television series. Published cheaply (they were considered a disposable item), and most often in paperback form, TV Tie-Ins first appeared in the 1950s and then enjoyed a boom period associated with the television series of the 1960s.

an exampleIn the 1970s and 1980s, Tie-Ins were published with some regularity. Increased publishing costs (and therefore higher costs for purchasing the books) led to decreased numbers of Tie-In novels during the 1990s and beyond, with a few major exceptions (the Star Trek series, Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Charmed, etc.). The popular trend in recent years to revive older shows (Mission Impossible, I Spy, Starsky and Hutch, Miami Vice) as new movies has lead to increased interest in Tie-In novels based on those original series.

an exampleThe quality of TV Tie-Ins has varied noticeably — they have often been looked upon with disdain by traditional readers. In some instances, this may have been with good reason — a large number of TV Tie-Ins were produced rapidly, by “house” authors under a pseudonym, to get them on the market as rapidly as possible. On the other hand, many TV Tie-In novels feature excellent writing, by prominent authors. The six I Spy novels written by Walter Wager under the pen name John Tiger, are considered by fans to be even better than most episodes of the series. Popular mystery author Stuart Kaminsky’s two Rockford Files novels were both critically well-received, but the rights-holders chose to discontinue the novels. Hugo-winning SF author C.J. Cherryh wrote a Lois & Clark novel. Lee Goldberg, creator/executive producer of Diagnosis Murder and writer for Monk has written original novels based on both those series. And bestselling author Max Allan Collins has written Tie-In novels for CSI.

tvtieinsTV Tie-Ins have been a collector favorite for many years, with books based on The Man From U.N.C.L.E. and Dark Shadows among the most sought-after titles. In the early days of Tie-Ins, the publishers would often number the books, with the earliest books having the largest print-run and the latest books having the smallest printing, therefore making them the most sought-after by collectors. One excellent book on the history of Tie-In collecting is highly recommended to folks trying to track down tie-in novels — TV Tie-Ins: A Bibliograpy of American TV Tie-In Paperbacks, filled with extensive listings of series that featured Tie-In novels prior to the early 1990s. Another new title, published in 2010, is Tied In: The Business, History and Craft of Media Tie-In Writing, edited by Lee Goldberg.

an exampleThis online booklist attempts to identify TV series for which the Lincoln City Libraries owns at least one TV Tie-In novel. This is, by no means, a “complete” list of all TV Tie-Ins ever published — there have literally been thousands of those. All books in this list which are owned by Lincoln City Libraries are hotlinked to their entries in our library catalog, so that you may check on their current availability. Some titles not owned by the libraries are included in this list due to their classic nature, or to provide a completed Tie-In list for that series. If you see a title on this list that is not hotlinked to our collection, please consider ordering it through our Interlibrary Loan department.

Note: Beginning in 2007, the International Association of Media Tie-In Writers begin presenting the Scribe Awards, to the best in media tie-in novels (including television tie-ins, movie tie-ins and other forms of media tie-in novels. Novels in the list below which were winners of Scribe Awards are marked with a ★.
