About the Book:

The perennial holiday favorite, A Christmas Carol, by Charles Dickens, was published original in December 1843, at the author's own expense -- Dickens was bickering with his previous publisher over some financial slights. Though not an immediately financial success for Dickens, the book pulled in highly positive reviews from the critics and readers of the era, and led Dickens to continue with a series of additional short Christmas-themed volume in subsequent years, as well as re-edited versions of the original A Christmas Carol, which Dickens felt had been a bit rushed on its first edition.

The story, which has been adapted innumerable times into film and television versions -- both true to the original and with modern flairs -- follows Ebeneezer Scrooge, a penny-pinching businessman with a closed-off heart and no social compassion, who (after a day of particularly unpleasant behavior) is visited overnight by the ghosts of Christmas Past, Christmas Present, and Christmas Future. Forced into a strong case of introspection, Scrooge reforms his miserly ways on Christmas morning, reuniting with relatives he's ignored, and showing kidness to one of his workers, with a crippled child.

If you're only familiar with the filmed versions, now is your opportunity to visit the original, in print form, and then come back here to comment on it.
