Dancers, Tacos and Novellas

September 02, 2009 by Sheila

As usual, a good time was had by all at the La Festival de las Americas (AKA) The Hispanic festival. The huge stage and abundant seating insured everyone had an excellent view of the performers. Many different dancers and musicians graced the stage, including several bands of children who danced skillfully and looked adorable in their bright colorful costumes.
Sheila and I shared a booth with Larry Williams of Lincoln’s Human Rights Commission. We were promoting our Spanish language materials which are really quite extensive. We now have online homework help available in Spanish as well as children and adult books (including novellas).
It was a beautiful day and many people stopped by to talk to us. We fielded questions about the library and handed out lots of info flyers and “love my library” bags.
We went home feeling fulfilled, both because we had successfully promoted Library Services and because our stomachs were full of festival food. We had papusas, empanadas and some kind of yummy cake with pineapple in it (just to name a few).
Although the Nebraska State Fair is moving to Grand Island, El Festival de las Americas no doubt will be here next year. We hope to see you there!

Parade Of Nations

June 09, 2009 by Sheila
Be there June 19 at 6pm when the Parade of Nations kicks off the evening entertainment during the first day of the Celebrate Lincoln International Festival.

Like the Parade of Nations featured in the Olympic Games, Celebrate Lincoln’s Parade of Nations introduces the festival’s audience to the nations and cultures that shape our community.

The goal of the Parade of Nations is to raise awareness and appreciation of the diversity of our community through a parade including the flags and clothing of those nations represented in our population.

To learn more about Celebrate Lincoln, see the Culturalistings June 4 blog post.
