World Refugee Day
June 04, 2009 by Sheila
World Refugee Day, June 20, is an international holiday that was initiated in 2000 by the United Nations General Assembly. It serves as reminder to educate ourselves about the plight of 31.5 million persons worldwide which UNHCR identifies as “persons of concern.” They include refugees, victims of human trafficking, asylum seekers, internally displaced and other stateless persons.
A free celebration of World Refugee Day will be held at Benson High School, 5120 Maple Street, in Omaha Nebraska, on June 20 from 10am-4pm. The event will include international music, dance and crafts, as well as a job fair and health screening.
