Summer Olympics Reading List

A Reading List

I’ve always been a huge Olympics fan. There’s just something about everyone coming together as a country to root for something positive. Growing up I would watch them every year, but I think the one that sticks out the most to me was the 2008 Beijing Olympics. I was taking care of my grandmother that summer and we watched the Olympic coverage every day. I’ll never forget Michael Phelps winning 8 gold medals and the excitement that went along with it. It was a great bonding moment for us to share that summer and now every time I see the logo I think of sitting side by side with her in our twin recliners watching Usain Bolt, Nastia Liukin, Misty May-Treanor, Kerri Walsh, Shawn Johnson, Dara Torres, Allyson Felix, and the many others who captured our attention that summer.

As you probably already know, there are many different sports featured in the Olympics. This reading list focuses specifically on the Summer Olympics. In the list below I’ve broken down the items in our collection – and a few available through Interlibrary Loan – into categories for easy searching/viewing. It includes items from our adult, teen and youth collections, as well as from our e-book collection, drawing most from the non-fiction sections, but there are also a few fiction novels mixed in. Material highlighted in this list is just a sampling of the works on each topic in the library collection.

Decathlon

The decathlon is a combined event in athletics consisting of ten track and field events. The word “decathlon” was formed, in analogy to the word “pentathlon”, from Greek δέκα (déka, meaning “ten”) and ἄθλος (áthlos, or ἄθλον, áthlon, meaning “contest” or “prize”). Events are held over two consecutive days and the winners are determined by the combined performance in all. Performance is judged on a points system in each event, not by the position achieved. The decathlon is contested mainly by male athletes, while female athletes typically compete in the heptathlon, until the early 2000s.

Traditionally, the title of “World’s Greatest Athlete” has been given to the person who wins the decathlon. This began when King Gustav V of Sweden told Jim Thorpe, “Sir, you are the world’s greatest athlete” after Thorpe won the decathlon at the Stockholm Olympics in 1912.

The event is similar to the pentathlon held at the ancient Greek Olympics, and also similar to a competition called an “all-around”, which was contested at the United States amateur championships in 1884. Another all-around was held at the 1904 Summer Olympics. The modern decathlon first appeared at the 1912 Games.

The vast majority of international and top level men’s decathlons, including at the Olympics, are divided into a two-day competition, with the track and field events held in the following order: (Day One) 100 Meters, Long Jump, Shot Put, High Jump, 400 Meters; (Day Two) 110 Meter Hurdles, Discus Throw, Pole Vault, Javelin Throw, 1500 Meters.

For decades, the decathlon was contested mainly by maile athletes, while women performed a pentathlon (5 events) or septathlon (7 events). A Women’s Decathlon was only approved by the IAAF in 2001. Currently, the women’s decathlon includes the following events: (Day One) 100 Meters, Discus Throw, Pole Vault, Javelin Throw, 400 Meters; (Day Two) 100 Meter Hurdles, Long Jump, Shot Put, High Jump, 1500 Meters.

Modern Pentathlon

The modern pentathlon is an Olympic sport that comprises five different events; fencing (one-touch épée), freestyle swimming (200 m), equestrian show jumping (15 jumps), and a final combined event of pistol shooting and cross country running (3200 m). This last event is now referred to as the laser-run, since it alternates four legs of laser pistol shooting followed by an 800 m run (for 3200 m in total). The event is inspired by the traditional pentathlon held during the ancient Olympics; as the original events were patterned on the skills needed by an ideal Greek soldier of the era, the modern pentathlon is similarly patterned on events representing the skills needed by infantry behind enemy lines. Please see the reading recommendations under each individual sport elsewhere in this list.
