Are you a fan of John Grogan’s 2005 bestseller Marley & Me? Join the crowd — The book maintained a position on the New York Times Bestsellers list for a lengthy period, and is a popular favorite for book discussion groups! Marley & Me is a sentimental, humor-filled look at the relationship between humans and the pets who adopt them, focusing on the author, his new wife, and his overly exuberant Labrador Retriever. It explores not only the physical needs and complications of pet ownership, but also the intense emotional ties that develop between humans and their animal companions. Numerous authors through the years have captured the attention of readers with tales of humans and animals, including Farley Mowat (Owls in the Family, Never Cry Wolf) and Joy Adamson (Born Free).

The authors listed below write works in a similar style to Grogan’s, although some of them may write works that are similar to Marley & Me in only tangential ways. This list focuses primarily on books published in the last 10-or-so years. You can see even more titles by doing a Subject search under “Human Animal Relationships” in our catalog. We recommend reading the jacket blurbs on any of these authors’ works before you commit to an entire book. The titles below are hotlinked to their holdings in our catalog, so that you may check on the availability of these books at the various branches of the Lincoln City Libraries.
