missingmanThe Missing Man
by Michael Cassutt

The space program and NASA are not sacred cows in this telling of a fictional murder of an astronaut by another astronaut to forward his own career and agenda. Knowledge of NASA’s history and key personnel is not required but would add to the reader’s enjoyment since the space program is the setting. Interesting behind-the-scenes information about training and the career ladder of astronauts.

radicalevolutionRadical Evolution
by Joel Garreau (599.938 Gar)

Radical Evolution by Joel Garreau is a great book for getting us to think about what humanity is and what it may become. As more and more technological change occurs at an ever-increasing rate, humans will have to cope with these changes or we may indeed perish as a species. Will we follow the Heaven Scenario, the Hell Scenario, or the Prevail Scenario? Will nanobots take over the world and turn everything into a gray goo? Or will we be able to embrace the new technology and bring health and happiness to all? I found this book to be incredibly thought-provoking and some of the research currently being done is just astounding. If you are interested in the future, this is a must read.

righttobehostileA Right to be Hostile
by Aaron McGruder (741.5 qMcG)

Shockingly funny yet still thought-provoking, McGruder’s “Boondocks” comics series does for young suburban African-Americans what “Doonesbury” did for angry liberals and anti-establishment types in the 1960s. While they may appear to be one dimensional, Huey — the “angry black man” in a pint-sized body, and Riley — the disaffected rap-addict street playa — are actually quite multi-dimensional when you can follow their growth over the course of a large anthology of strips like this. Surrounded by a colorful and extensive supporting cast of characters, Huey and Riley’s observations about the state of contemporary ethnic culture and wholesale American society are both bitingly funny and depressingly accurate. A must for the serious comic-strip fan or anyone interested in political humor that pokes fun at figures on both sides of the political divide.

nerowolfedvdNero Wolfe: The Complete First Season
by Rex Stout

The classic Nero Wolfe mysteries by Rex Stout were brought to glorious full-color life on television’s A&E network in 2001 and 2002, starring Maury Chaykin as Wolfe, and Timothy Hutton as loyal legman Archie Goodwin. With excellent production values, superb performances, a stylish musical soundtrack and energetic pace and editing style, these episodes are a can’t-miss for true Nero Wolfe enthusiasts.
