Just Desserts: Underappreciated Mystery Authors and/or Series

The July 30th 2020 Just Desserts meeting that took place online, using Zoom meeting software, had a unique theme – “Underappreciated Mystery Authors or Series”. All participants were encouraged to share their recommendation of a mystery/suspense/thriller author and/or series that is not a “blockbuster” success, but that they think other readers should sample.
Here’s the list of “Underappreciated Mystery Authors/Series” recommended by Just Desserts members in July 2020:
- Christopher Fowler – the Bryant & May series
- Brian May – Entry Island, and the Yan & Campbell series
- “Richard Castle” – the Derrick Storm series
- Edmund Crispin – the Gervase Fen series, including The Moving Toyshop
- William DeAndrea – The Hog Murders
- Alafair Burke – both on her own and partnered with Mary Higgins Clark
- Robert Van Gulick – the Judge Dee series
- Mike Lawson – the Joe De Marco series (library mainly has in electronic formats)
- J.A. Jance – the Ali Reynolds series
- Jilliane Hoffman – the C.J. Townsend series (Retribution, Last Witness, Cutting Room)
- Louise Penny – the Inspector Gamache/Three Pines series
- Caz Frear – the Cat Kinsella series
- Lee Goldberg – the Monk and Diagnosis: Murder original tie-in novels, and his all-original Ian Ludlow and Eve Ronin series
