"Heritage" by Eddie Dominguez

Sculpture Brings Sense of Home to Eiseley Branch Library

When visitors step into the Loren C. Eiseley Branch Library, they are now greeted by a new presence: a ceramic carved torso titled Heritage by acclaimed artist Eddie Dominguez. Rich hues and detailed etchings evoke family narratives and landscapes from Dominguez’s New Mexican upbringing and his time in Nebraska. The work invites reflection on personal and communal histories alike.

On the evening of its unveiling, art and community came together among the stacks to celebrate this remarkable addition. Guests gathered to hear from Dominguez, library and City leaders, and representatives from the Museum of Nebraska Art (MONA) and Public Art Lincoln. This collaboration marks a first-of-its-kind partnership, bringing together institutions dedicated to enriching public spaces through art and culture.

Dominguez recently retired after 25 years of teaching ceramics and sculpture at the University of Nebraska–Lincoln. He has exhibited his art in museums nationwide, including the Smithsonian and the Renwick Gallery. With Heritage, he merges his cultural roots with the library’s mission of connection and learning. The sculpture is on loan through MONA, ensuring its story reaches beyond walls and borders.

A testament to the power of place, Heritage reminds us that art, like literature, unites different experiences and encourages us to explore the many facets of our shared history. We invite you to stop in and experience this beautiful work for yourself!
