Frequently Asked Questions About the 2021 Summer Reading Challenge

Tails & Tales

What’s different this year:

Welcome to the Library!

We’re happy you’ve chosen to bring your group to the library! We want to remind you of a few guidelines to follow while you are visiting:

  • Your adult staff are in charge of supervising the youth in their care while they are here. Please keep your group together and within eyesight of your staff at all times.
  • We will be following the Directed Health Measures for the city. Please make sure you are aware of the current DHM and follow the stated practice. Staff can update you if you need more information.
  • Since most children will not be vaccinated, please keep your group of children together as much as possible and avoid having them mix with other children.

Please sign your group up for the Summer Reading Challenge! It’s quick and easy to do. Our staff can help you do this and your kids can earn great prizes for both registering for, and completing, the program.

Due to the pandemic and the fact that children have not been vaccinated yet, we will not have any large in-person Summer Reading Challenge events in June or July.

We will not be using youth volunteers for our Summer Reading Challenge this year. Please see additional information on our Teen page.

There will be a Summer Reading Challenge Kick-off game with the Lincoln Saltdogs on Friday night, June 11. Everyone who registers for the Summer Reading Challenge will receive a free ticket.

In addition, all registrants will receive a book bag, and a plantable paper bookmark while supplies last.

Tell me more about the plantable bookmarks. These bookmarks are a wildflower mix and contain the following seeds: black-eyed susan, spurred snapdragon, sweet alyssum, bird’s eye, farewell to spring, and dwarf catchfly. Moisten card and plant just under the surface of some soil in a sunny spot. Water regularly until seeds germinate and watch them grow!

Preregister for the challenge between May 21 and May 31 and you’ll be entered into a drawing for one of 20 – $50 gift cards from Target, Super Saver, Russ’s, Walmart or Hy-Vee.

Everyone who completes the challenge will receive a coupon sheet for free and reduced-price fun and food, and a free ticket to the Summer Reading Recognition event with the Lincoln Saltdogs on Saturday night, August 14. The Saltdogs event has been rescheduled to Sunday, August 15 at 1:30 p.m.

In addition, everyone who completes the challenge will receive a ticket to a free family pool party at Star City Shores, Saturday, July 31, 10-11:30, or Tuesday, August 3, from 6:30-8 p.m. (if health regulations allow).
