Your 2018 Just Desserts hiatus reading assignment — the Rabbi David Small series by Harry Kemelman

During the Nov/Dec 2018 hiatus between meetings of the Just Desserts mystery fiction discussion group, we encourage regular attendees to continue to participate as a group…but in a virtual way. While we may not have an actual meeting scheduled during these two months, this blog is available to keep everyone active with their mystery reading and discussions.

One of the popular and well-known authors we would have liked to have used for a regular monthly Just Desserts discussion is Harry Kemelman, author of the “Rabbi David Small” series. Because of the limited number of copies of his works in the libraries’ collection, we’ve never used him for one of the regular discussion months, but he’s a perfect selection to be our “hiatus assignment” for 2018, as the libraries do own at least one copy of each of his Rabbi Small titles, and group members can track down whichever volumes they want to read at their leisure.

The Lincoln City Libraries currently own 11 of Kemelman’s 12 “David Small” novels, excluding 1981’s Conversations With Rabbi Small, which is the one volume in the series that is NOT actually a mystery, anyway.

You can visit the Rabbi David Small series booklist on BookGuide for more information about Kemelman, and for hotlinks into the libraries’ online catalog to check on the status of all of his books.

For the purposes of Just Desserts, we encourage you to read ANY of Kemelman’s “Rabbit David Small” series of novels, and return to this Just Desserts blog post to leave a comment, in response to the following question. We look forward to seeing your comments here over the course of the next two months!

So…here’s your question:

Which of the Rabbi David Small novels did you read, and what was your opinion?

Whether or not you attended the actual meeting, you are welcome to share your own thoughts and opinions about Red Stout and Nero Wolfe, in a reply comment to this blog post, below.
